THE PROJECT

The project delivered a £1.2 million architectural extension and refurbishment, introducing two new wings overlooking the canal, a fully reconfigured ground floor layout, extensive new glazing, and a bespoke contemporary kitchen designed as the focal point of the home.

Rather than creating a single large extension, the design strategy carefully composed a series of architectural elements that allowed the property to grow naturally while improving the quality of internal space and connections to the garden.

Project Background

The original house had a fragmented internal layout and limited connection to the surrounding landscape. Although the property occupied an attractive setting overlooking the canal, the interior spaces failed to take advantage of the views or natural light.

The client’s ambition was to transform the property into a high-quality contemporary family home, while significantly increasing the usable space.

The brief included:

• A new gym wing overlooking the water
• A dedicated office wing providing a quiet working environment
• A complete reconfiguration of the ground floor
• A new contemporary kitchen and living space
• Replacement of all glazing throughout the house

The challenge was to introduce these new elements in a way that felt coherent with the existing building rather than appearing as disconnected additions.

Luxury House Extension Design Strategy

The architectural approach focused on developing a balanced composition of new extensions and existing structure.

Rather than overwhelming the original house with a single large volume, the new design introduced carefully proportioned wings that extended the building footprint while maintaining visual clarity.

The new gym wing and office wing were positioned to maximise views across the landscape and canal, creating strong visual connections between interior spaces and the surrounding environment.

Large areas of glazing were introduced to increase daylight levels and create a stronger relationship between inside and outside. This strategy transformed the previously enclosed layout into a sequence of bright and open living spaces.

By integrating the extensions with the existing structure, the project achieved a cohesive architectural identity, ensuring the house reads as a single carefully designed home rather than a series of additions.

Interior Reconfiguration

A major element of the luxury house extension design involved the complete reorganisation of the ground floor plan.

The original layout consisted of several smaller rooms that limited the flow of space and restricted natural light.

Through the architectural redesign, the ground floor was opened up to create a series of interconnected spaces centred around the new kitchen and living areas.

This transformation allowed the home to function far more effectively for modern family life, with clear spatial relationships between:

The result is a much more fluid internal environment where daylight, views and movement through the house all work together to enhance the experience of the space.

Contemporary Glazing and Architectural Detail

The project also included the complete replacement of the existing glazing, introducing larger contemporary window systems throughout the property.

These new glazing elements were carefully designed to frame views of the surrounding landscape while significantly improving natural light within the interior spaces.

Within the new gym wing, the design incorporated 7.5-metre sliding glass doors that fully retract into a concealed wall pocket. When open, the entire elevation disappears, allowing the gym space to open directly onto the terrace and swimming pool while providing uninterrupted views across the canal beyond.

Full-height glazing across the new extensions strengthens the visual connection between the interior spaces, garden and surrounding landscape, reinforcing the architectural intention of opening the house toward its setting.

At the same time, careful detailing ensures the glazing elements remain refined and proportionate within the overall composition of the building, allowing the contemporary additions to sit comfortably alongside the existing structure.

Contract Administration and Project Delivery

Given the scale of the project, Carter Designs remained involved beyond the design stages and acted as Contract Administrator during construction.

This role included overseeing the delivery of the works on site, issuing architectural instructions where required and certifying interim payments throughout the build.

Maintaining architectural oversight during construction ensured that the quality of materials, detailing and workmanship remained consistent with the original design intent. For projects of this complexity, this level of professional involvement is critical to ensuring that the finished building reflects the ambitions established during the design stages.
